Is It Stockpiling or Hoarding...and Are You Being Watched?

The words stockpiling and hoarding have become somewhat interchangeable in the context of prepping, and the line between the two can get blurry.

In my opinion, the key is to recognize the difference and not let anyone try to guilt or shame you for wanting to be sure you have what you need in an emergency.

Yes, there are specific federal and state laws regarding the hoarding of goods during declared emergencies, primarily designed to prevent the depletion of essential supplies and to combat price gouging. But prepping is about being ready and having what you need before an emergency is declared.

However, with laws becoming increasingly broad and vague, and with the Fourth Amendment being treated as a suggestion and not a American right, there are some preppers who believe that even when you’re buying extra things to build your stash over time and not doing anything close to “hoarding,” you may be accused of that anyway. Further, they assert those who buy at bulk stores like BJ’s, Costco and Sam’s Club are being watched for patterns.

So, how do you stockpile without being seen as a hoarder? What is the difference? And how do you prep discreetly, getting what you need without being perhaps flagged for having an Emergency stash?
